Qalandars Begin Title Defence in Style with Crushing Victory
Lahore Qalandars began their title defence in dominant fashion, hammering Hyderabad Kingsmen by 69 runs in the opening match of the season. It was a complete performance from the defending champions, powered by a fluent half-century from Fakhar Zaman and crucial contributions down the order that lifted them to 199. In response, the Kingsmen faltered badly, folding for just 130 as five Qalandars bowlers shared the spoils. Marnus Labuschagne’s side never looked in control during the chase.
With a scaled-down opening ceremony and empty stands due to fuel conservation measures linked to the West Asia crisis, Shaheen Afridi chose to bat first—and his side wasted no time asserting dominance. Fakhar and Mohammad Naeem launched an aggressive start, adding 84 runs in just 50 balls before Hassan Khan provided the breakthrough.
The Kingsmen briefly clawed back during the middle overs, slowing the scoring rate and picking up four wickets for just 47 runs across seven overs. However, Haseebullah Khan and Sikandar Raza shifted momentum again with a rapid 45-run stand off 21 balls. Afridi then added the finishing touch, smashing two sixes off Mohammad Ali to push the total close to 200.
The Qalandars carried that intensity into the field. Afridi and Ubaid Shah struck early to remove Usman Khan and Saim Ayub, putting the Kingsmen under immediate pressure. Haris Rauf and Raza then ripped through the middle order, leaving Labuschagne’s 26 as the top score in an otherwise underwhelming batting display.
With the result beyond doubt, the Kingsmen shifted focus to damage control, aiming simply to cross 100 and limit the impact on net run rate. However, even that effort ended on a poor note, with two run-outs capping off a disappointing outing. The Qalandars, meanwhile, sent a strong message—reaffirming why they have won three of the last four PSL titles and underlining their credentials as serious contenders once again.
